## Malaysia's New Electricity Tariff: A Guide for Households to Cut Costs

*Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia* - Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has rolled out a significant restructuring of its electricity tariff for Peninsular Malaysia, effective July 1, 2025. The new framework introduces a key change for residential consumers: an optional Time of Use (TOU) tariff, previously limited to commercial and industrial users. This provides households with the opportunity to actively manage their electricity bills by shifting their consumption to off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper.

The TOU tariff is available to all domestic customers with a smart meter. For commercial consumers, the TOU tariff structure has also been updated, continuing to offer different rates for peak and off-peak periods to encourage efficient energy use.

### Understanding the Time of Use (TOU) Tariff for Domestic Users

Under the new TOU tariff, the day is divided into two main periods with different electricity rates:

* *Peak Hours:* 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM (Monday to Friday) - During this time, electricity rates will be at their highest.

* *Off-Peak Hours:* 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM (Monday to Friday) and all day on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays - Electricity consumed during these hours will be charged at a lower rate.

This new structure is designed to incentivize consumers to use less electricity during periods of high demand on the national grid.

### Strategic Housework Scheduling to Minimize Your Electricity Bill

For domestic users who opt-in to the TOU tariff, strategically timing household chores and activities can lead to significant savings on their monthly electricity bills. Here are some practical suggestions:

*High-Energy Appliance Usage:*

The key to maximizing savings under the TOU tariff is to run your most energy-intensive appliances during off-peak hours. These include:

* *Washing Machines and Clothes Dryers:* Schedule your laundry for the evenings after 10:00 PM on weekdays or anytime during the weekend. A full load of washing and drying can consume a substantial amount of electricity.

* *Dishwashers:* Run your dishwasher overnight. Most modern dishwashers have a delayed start function, making it easy to set it to run during the off-peak period.

* *Water Heaters:* If you use an electric water heater, consider heating water for your morning showers late at night or early in the morning before 8:00 AM. For evening showers, heating can be done after 10:00 PM.

* *Ovens and Electric Stoves:* For major cooking or baking that requires prolonged use of the oven or stove, try to shift these activities to the weekends. If you need to cook on a weekday, aim for the off-peak hours if possible, or consider using smaller, more energy-efficient appliances like microwaves and air fryers for quicker meals during peak times.

* *Air Conditioning:* This is a major contributor to high electricity bills. During peak hours on weekdays, try to minimize air conditioner usage. Pre-cool your rooms before 8:00 AM or rely on fans. If you need to use the air conditioner during the day, set the thermostat to a moderate temperature (24-26°C). The most significant savings will come from running your air conditioning primarily during the off-peak hours of the night.

*Home and Surrounding Area Chores:*

* *Vacuuming:* As vacuum cleaners can be power-hungry, it's best to do your vacuuming during the weekend or on weekday evenings after 10:00 PM.

* *Ironing:* A steam iron can consume a considerable amount of electricity. Try to do your ironing in larger batches during the off-peak hours.

* *Power Tools:* For any DIY projects around the house that require the use of electric drills, saws, or other power tools, plan to do this work on the weekends.

* *Garden and Pool Pumps:* If you have an electric water pump for your garden or a swimming pool pump, ensure their operating schedules are set for the off-peak hours.

By making these conscious adjustments to your daily and weekly routines, you can take full advantage of the new TOU tariff and significantly reduce your household's electricity expenditure. It is advisable for consumers to monitor their electricity consumption through their smart meters to understand their usage patterns and identify more opportunities for savings.
